The Golden Mask Festival is an annual, national festival of performing arts in Russia established in 1994. The festival presents the best drama, opera, ballet, operetta/musical, contemporary dance and puppet theatre productions. The Golden Mask Award is conferred upon the best productions, directors, choreographers, conductors, set designers and actors. In addition, the Golden Mask Association has initiated a number of festivals and projects. The presentation of the best Russian theatres in various cities of Russia and internationally; the Russian Case programme; the PRO-Teatr Performing Arts Market; special programmes that include master-classes, workshops and educational initiatives; and the Goldenmask.club are among them.

The programme Best Performances in Russian Cities has been held since 2000 with the support of the Federal Agency of Culture and Cinematography and the Savings Bank of Russia (Sberbank). The aim of the programme is to present in regional theatres the most outstanding performances, nominees and winners of the Golden Mask award. In conceiving the project, the Golden Mask aimed to renew and fully develop a touring policy in Russia. Thus, Golden Mask festivals have taken place in more than twenty cities: Ekaterinburg, Cheboksary, Chelyabinsk, Irkutsk, Kazan, Magnitogorsk, Nizhni Novgorod, Norilsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Orel, Perm, Rostov-on-Don, Stary Oskol, Tyumen, Yaroslavl and others, presenting the most recent works of remarkable modern directors, actors, and choreographers. The regional festivals are accompanied by seminars and master-classes of the most important figures of Russian theatre.

Since 2005 the Golden Mask has developed its activity in the field of international cultural cooperation. The first project outside Russia was a festival in Estonia in October 2005. In November 2006 the best of Russian theatre was presented in Estonia and Latvia. In the beginning of the summer of 2007 the festival Golden Mask in Latvia was held in two Latvian cities - Riga and Liepaya, and at the beginning of November 2007 the festival Golden Mask in Estonia took place in four Estonian cities. These festivals are to become regular events supported by the Russian Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography and the governments and city councils in both countries.

The Russian Case programme has been held in the framework of the Golden Mask Festival since 2001. The programme is addressed to foreign visitors: festival directors, producers, theatre journalists and critics. During the years of its existence, more than 600 theatre professionals from Europe, the USA, and Asia have attended the Russian Case. The participation of Russian theatres in the Russian Case programme increases their international visibility and directly or indirectly promotes their foreign tours and contacts.

The first edition of PRO-Teatr Performing Arts Market was organized by the Golden Mask in 2006. More than fifty theatres from Russia took part in the fair. PRO-Teatr-2007 expanded the geography of participants to include several international participants performing arts markets, festivals and theatres from China, Latvia, Finland and Poland. The Golden Mask aims to make PRO-Teatr an important international performing arts market held annually.

Within the framework of the main festival, the Golden Mask annually organizes special programmes devoted to topical issues of theatre art and the festival movement at large. The programme includes round tables, practical seminars, master-classes, and educational initiatives. These are attended by managers of largest theatres and festivals in Europe and Russia, outstanding actors, directors, and experts in various areas of theatre art, cultural management, and theatre criticism, as well as representatives of the Russian and foreign mass-media. The aim of this platform is to involve Russian theatre professionals in the discussion of the most urgent issues of modern culture, in their training and in the search for solutions to existing problems.

The programme of the "Goldenmask.club" consists of concerts by Russian and foreign stars of musical scene. The club also hosts meetings, conferences, and exhibitions. The club operates in the Theatre Centre On Strastnoi and is open during the Golden Mask Festival for visitors, participants and spectators.
